Chapter 1: Diagnosis and evaluation of anemia in CKD

چکیده

BACKGROUND In any individual, anemia may be the initial laboratory sign of an underlying medical problem. Consequently, a complete blood count, including the hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, is routinely part of global health assessment in most adults, whether or not they have chronic kidney disease (CKD). In patients with CKD but stable kidney function, the appearance or progression of anemia may herald a new problem that is causing blood loss or is interfering with red cell production. The anemia should be evaluated independently of CKD stage in order to identify any reversible process contributing to the anemia. The causes of acquired anemia are myriad and too many to include in a guideline such as this. A comprehensive list of causes and the approach to diagnosis can be found in a standard textbook of medicine or hematology. The most commonly encountered reversible cause of chronic anemia or worsening anemia in CKD patients, other than anemia related directly to CKD, is iron deficiency anemia.

Chapter 15: Anemia in the Elderly With CKD

Anemia is a common sequela of chronic kidney disease (CKD). As GFR declines, the risk of anemia increases, particularly when the GFR is 60 ml/min per 1.73 m2.1 Anemia is also common in the geriatric population, with a prevalence of 10% in patients greater than 65 yr old (Figure 1).2 This poses a significant challenge in the diagnosis and management of elderly patients with anemia who have concu...

بررسی وضعیت ذخایر آهن و شیوع کم خونی فقر آهن در مبتلایان به بیماری مزمن کلیوی در مراحل پیش از دیالیز (pre-dialysis) و همودیالیز نگهدارنده

Background and Objective: Anemia is one of the major disabling consequences in chronic kidney (CKD) disease which has different etiologies .Inadequate production of Erythropoietin (EPO) is the main cause of anemia. Iron shortage is the other important cause. The aim of this study is to evaluate Anemia Prevalence and iron storage in CKD patients in pre-dialysis and hemodialysis stages.   Mater...

Effect of pentoxifylline on anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis

Background: Pentoxifylline, a valuable medication with promising clinical characteristics and considerable profile of safety is used in many conditions namely chronic kidney diseases (CKD). However, the decision to prescribe pentoxifylline for anemia in CKD should be based on evidence accrued from randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Yet, substantial heterogeneity exists in studies performed to...

Management of Anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease: Revisited

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) leads to a wide range of systemic derangements. Anemia is a common complication among CKD patients.1 Anemia begins to manifest when GFR falls below 60ml/min/1.73 m2 (Stage III).2 In our previous review published in 1999,3 we did an effort to explain the basic pathophysiology and elaborate various treatment modalities for treatment of anemia. Management of anemia in ...
